If you’ve been wondering what’s been happening with the group of active and concerned people in Education Not Incarceration – ENI – this newsletter will try to catch you up with what we are doing and planning. Since last summer, ENI has been in an internal process of struggle and change. This experience has sometimes been challenging, sometimes educational, and always well worth the energies invested in it. If you are concerned about young people, and want to plant some seeds that can produce a much brighter future for them, you know WHY we feel it’s worth the time, the strain, and the effort.
Some people have left ENI leadership, others have remained, and some new people have joined. The ENI Board of Directors has been meeting regularly for many months, engaged in serious soul-searching, and working on fund-raising, outreach, partnerships, setting up a crisis line for youth pushed out from school, program development, our database, and last but not least, finding an office to meet our needs for organizational and meeting space.
We are focusing our energy on the issue of discipline in schools, working with students, parents and teachers to create alternatives to punitive discipline and looking for effective models already in use in schools throughout the country.
We hope you’ll want to help us with this work,
Sincerely,
Education Not Incarceration Board of Directors
